Truck Driving and Vision Care

Quick and simple tips for truckers, equipment operators and other Professional drivers, to reduce fatigue and protect vision.
It’s more common than you might realize, and it can be deadly. You’ve been on the road for three days straight, with not enough sleep, and the air-conditioner and diesel exhaust blasting your face and eyes. After a while, your lips and face get chapped, your neck and shoulders feel stiff, and your eyelids become so heavy you have to stop and grab some coffee. Even then, your eyes may continue to feel tired and burning. Because you’re on a tight schedule, you press on even though your eyes continue to bother you and you know you’re becoming a road hazard. There often just isn’t time, on the road, to adequately protect your eyes.
As you are probably aware, there are several things drivers can do to prevent or relieve tired, strained, irritated “Trucker’s Eyes” on a long distance trip. You’ll be pleased to learn that not all of them involve coffee or eyedrops, either. Bio-Logic Aqua Technologies Biomedical Research has developed a wealth of new information about caring for eyes and skin – the result of a decade of research into dry air and eye moisture. Even if you don’t follow these recommendations to the letter, you never know when the information might come in handy. It might even prevent an accident.

The number-one villain: Dehydration

Much of the discomfort that truckers experience while driving comes from dehydration (drying out) of the eyes, skin (especially the facial skin), and breathing passages. Alleviate the dryness and many of the the symptoms go away!

Dry irritated eyes.

Several environmental factors in the typical truck cabin can combine to cause a slight increase in the rate of moisture (water) evaporation from the TEAR FILM covering the eyes’ exposed surfaces. The tear film is amazingly complex even though it is only about five microns (millionths of a meter) thick. It doesn’t take much evaporation to cause problems. The tear film consists of:
Lipid layer. This topmost layer is comprised of a very thin film of fatty oil that lubricates the eyelid and slows moisture evaporation from the lower layers.
Aqueous layer. The middle and thickest layer contains the vast majority of the tear film’s moisture. This is where most moisture loss occurs. The layer also contains electrolytes, proteins and bacteria-fighting antibodies. It provides oxygenated water to allow the cornea to breathe.
Mucin layer. This bottom layer glues the tear film to the optical surface. The most physically irritating result of tear film moisture loss is an over-concentration of electrolyte (salt) and proteins in the aqueous layer. The results are itching, burning, eye-strain, fatigue and other symptoms. Lack of adequate tear film moisture is called, “dry eye,” “dry irritated eyes,” or “trucker’s dry eye.”

Soothing dry irritated eyes.

Soothing dry irritated eyes is a simple and logical procedure: Simply add moisture to the tear film! However, over the past 110 years of medical research, this has proved more easily said than done. While traditional formulated eyedrops can be beneficial (mostly as a moisture sealer), they are difficult to apply and not always effective. And you need to pull your vehicle off the road to apply them! Also, the chemicals and preservatives in eyedrops can cause an allergic reaction. That’s why it says on the label not to use eyedrops more than three or four times a day.
The primary drawback to eyedrops is that instead of working naturally to augment and replenish tear film moisture, because of the large size of the drops (up to ten times the entire tear film volume), they can flood and wash away the tear film, replacing it with artificial chemicals. The protective antibodies that fight bacteria are also washed away.

Just-a-Mist.

The best way to keep eyes moist is to mist with Nature’s Tears EyeMist whenever discomfort is felt. Vision care tips for truckers.

1. Smoking while driving is especially unhealthy because of the confined space. It addition to damaging lungs and heart, cigarette smoke is extremely irritating to eyes – even with a window opened.
2. Drink plenty of water while driving. Luke-warm water is less likely to make you go to the bathroom.
3. Sunglasses, obviously, can help reduce road glare.
4. Eat foods with high water content, and easily digested foods.
5. Get as much sleep as you can. Try to keep as normal a sleep schedule as possible.
6. Truck stop showers are great but long, luxuriant motel baths are even better. If you can’t take a bath, take frequent long, hot showers, keeping eyes opened and breathing in the steam.
7. After sleeping, after showering, and several times a day in-between if your eyes are causing problems, put hot compresses on your face and eyes with a wet, soapless washcloth. Rinse and repeat several times. This will cleanse and moisturize the skin and eyes, and draw out toxins.
8. Keep Nature’s Tears EyeMist handy wherever you go. Skin Moisture Absorption and Utilization

When the surrounding air humidity drops below 70%, skin moisture loss increases. The result can be dry skin, eyes and mouth (all signs that the body's hydration system is out of balance). Skin dehydration shrinks blood capillaries making the skin appear dull, thin and pale. 
 
Internal water is vitally important for the body to regulate, maintain and repair its various systems. Most water on earth is alkaline, and before the body sends water to the integument (skin), the body acidifies it because skin must maintain its acidity to protect against bacteria flora, which prefer alkaline environments.  

Unfortunately, skin can lose water by "sensible perspiration" through sweat, or "insensible perspiration" through transepidermal water loss or "TEWL". An external water source can be highly beneficial in restoring lost moisture to the skin. The shortest pathway from the skin's surface into the dermis is through the hair follicle and sweat glands (pores). To enter, moisture must (a) be applied as a fine mist and (b) have a slightly acidic pH balance to penetrate the stratum corneum's acid-mantle protection barrier.

About the Mist

Moisture Is Water!

Creams and lotions are not moisture, even when labeled as "moisturizers". Moisture can certainly contain substances other than water, but as water diffuses into moisture, the dissolved minerals, contaminants, and pollutants, can remain suspended in the minute moisture droplets.

The Amazing Tear Film.

The ocular tear film the covers the exposed portion of the eye and is only four or five microns thick. When eyes become dry, the ultimate cause is usually moisture depletion in the tear film's middle layer. This depletion can total no more than two to five nanoliters but those barely measurable quantities can make a huge difference. Replace those nanoliters and your eyes will feel much more comfortable.

The Eye Drop Dilemma.

How do you get two to five nanoliters of into the aqueous layer? You could use a very tiny eyedropper but it would be needle thin and not practical for safety reasons. The typical commercial eyedropper is much larger and blunt-ended. Its drops, however, contain ten to 40 times the volume of the entire tear film. Drops that large flood the tear film and wash away the overlying lipid (oil) layer, whose purpose is to slow moisture evaporation from the aqueous layer. Disrupting the lipid layer can make dry eyes even dryer.

The Mist Solution.

The "Mist Solution," discovered by Nature's Tears EyeMist, utilizes an ultra-fine mist instead of drops. The micron-droplets penetrate the overlying lipid layer much like vinegar penetrates salad oil: the oil parts, the water enters and the oil then reseals.
Using the right water is critical. Water for the eyes must be sterile and free from contaminants and pollution. It must be mostly free from salt, heavy metals, artificial formulations and potentially allergenic preservatives. It must contain minute quantities of beneficial minerals such as silicon, calcium and potassium. And it must have a pH (acid/alkaline) balance that is compatible with the tear film's pH.

A word about salt:

Everyone knows that tears are salty, but exactly how salty they are can be critical. When the aqueous layer loses water to evaporation, the salt remains. It is this over-concentration of salt that causes discomfort. Discomfort is alleviated only when the salt concentration is diluted to normal levels. Adding salt to dry irritated eyes (salt is an ingredient in nearly all artificial tear products), cannot not possibly dilute the aqueous layer's salt.
